Feedback from Workshop Eleven - Sunday 2nd March 2014 (Afternoon Session)

Workshop Eleven - Sunday 2nd March 2014:  Facilitated by Ross Goudie (Afternoon Session)

Ian Campbell - 42 years - 6 Queen Street.  Flooding on property - but not in house.  Palm Court lowered the road and the culvert was too small.  Maranui is a concern as there is still a lot of houses to be built.  Where is the water going to go?

Jeff - 12 Hinemoa Street - 12 years.  Flooded twice due to dam over topping.

Bowentown Boulevard - 40 years.  Last few years seen an increase in flooding.  Infill and hard surfaces are making it worse.  Otawhiwhi drain is overgrown and needs addressing.  Looking forward to a positive.

Dave Lidden - Surf Lifesaving club - 5 years.  Has been flooded.  Maranui resident wants to know what is happening.

Kitty Burton - Terrace - holiday home.  No direct impact but has seen the damage to other properties.  Concerned about the slips after heavy rain and why they have happened.

Ian Campbell - Thinks that his area has been engineered to flood now.  Broadlands Block should be better utilised.

Jeff - Low lying areas can be protected.  They don't have to flood.  Might be good to have more effective dam control.  Apparently there have been some issues in the past.  Does not appear to be a good maintenance schedule.

Doug - Marae drain needs to be cleared out.

Dave - Lot of silt built up when dam overtops and affected the surf club quite badly.  Insurance impact at the surf club - no more cover.  Waiting for clarification on the flood zones.  Can be knee high through the bottom of the club.

Ian - Drains need spraying before winter - quite overgrown.  Debt fund the works over a large number of years.  Culvert increased from 600mm to 1000mm.

Clare and John - Wallnutt Avenue - Have been flood up to 1 foot deep in the garage.  Comes up to the garage door. House is above the garage.  No increase in flooding over the years.  Maintenance is an issue.  New culverts have helped.  Unhappy about the new flood maps and the impact on the property.

Workshop attendees were then asked to write down on Post-it notes what issues were created for the community/property owners when it flooded:

Environment

  • Flooding by us at Pio is getting worse
  • 'Big' rain events seem more common now than 10 years ago
  • Heavy rain event causing anxiety because of my illness
  • Slips on The Terrace
  • Look at escape channel for high tide on Savage Reserve

Maintenance

  • Flash flooding at main end caused by dam over-topping and twin culverts at 'Top 10' bridge not coping
  • Existing infrastructure ie. pipes are too small
  • Control dam levels
  • Are the drains / culverts being widened / increased to put the surf lifesaving club more at risk
  • Maranui parking area cleaned out - de-silt
  • Investigate pumping stormwater in Wallnutt Avenue area
  • Spraying of drain behind pub
  • Spray the growth in the drain to the harbour Pio Shores

Pipes and Drains

  • Solve problem of getting flood water clear at Pio Shores
  • New stormwater drains needed in the road please.  Also better gutter and vehicle crossing designs.
  • Since the new culverts have been in place water levels rise less slowly but still flood if rain persists for a day or more
  • Street levels and gutters and footpaths need re-aligning
  • Do something really soon please!!

Flood Zones

  • When is the new flood zone put out as possible (new zone) last year going to be agreed upon?
  • Review of the proposed flood plan zones.  Line on our property extends to back top corner but only front 1/3rd of section affected.

Development

  • Long term plan for stormwater from Maranui Estate
  • Water flowing over the centre channel and back into the subdivision Pio Shores
  • Maranui Estate drainage
  • Wash out on vehicle beach access at north end - divert?
