UPDATE 14 June 2019:

KiwiCamp planned for this summer - Western Bay of Plenty District Council is planning to put the new KiwiCamp facility at the Seaforth Road carpark near Bowentown in time for the 2019/20 summer season, subject to appropriate consents being obtained. Read more.

Council is engaging on the preferred location of the KiwiCamp facility for the Waihi Beach area. Feedback closes 4pm, Friday 17 May 2019.

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW:

  • Council is working to extend its efforts to improve conditions for freedom campers and remove some of the anxiety they cause in local communities, particularly Waihi Beach.
  • Council was one of 30 councils to apply for funding from the Government for local initiatives associated with freedom camping for the peak 2018/19 summer season. It was one of only three councils to gain funding for a KiwiCamp facility.
  • Council was granted $340,000 and the money was approved specifically for Council to implement the following:
  • $200,000 for the establishment of a KiwiCamp facility
  • $80,000 for additional monitoring across the Western Bay District
  • $60,000 for smart/compactor bins to be located at a range of freedom camping sites throughout the District.
  • The facility can be used by anyone, not just freedom campers.
  • Toilets are free for public use.
  • The remaining facilities (e.g. laundry, showers, etc) are charged on a pay-per-use basis.
  • Freedom Camping rules still apply:
    • Having a KiwiCamp facility does not increase the area available for freedom campers staying overnight.
    • Freedom camping is only allowed within designated freedom camping areas.
    • Only certified self-contained vehicles can use those areas i.e. no tenting and no non-self-contained vehicles.
